This was the former residence of Shonan Yokoi, a thinker from the latter half of the 19th century. He lived here from 1855 until he was invited to move to Edo (now Tokyo) by the new Meiji government in 1868 (a total of about 8 years taking into account the time in between when he lived in Fukui). During his time here, he ran a private school named Shijiken where he mentored his disciples and attracted prominent figures of the era, such as Sakamoto Ryoma. The residence, particularly its tatami rooms which have been preserved in their original form, was restored along with a memorial hall in 1982. Today, it houses exhibits related to Shonan Yokoi and his legacy.
