Kajiyamachi Avenue: Um-Sum Carta

Kajiyamachi-dori (or Kajiyamachi Avenue) is full of remnants from the old times, and it has a long history of Sawara clan’s presence - approximately 700 years. As you stroll down the strip, you will quickly find numerous traditional housings and shops here. The stone-paved streets are filled with old-time tea shops, miso/soy makers, and blacksmiths’ garage - it literally takes you back to ancient Japan.

In here, there is a shop called ”Tateyama Shoten” where Um-Sum Carta games are being taught. This Portuguese card games have made their way into Japan during Edo-period and, for some reason, has only stayed prevalent in Hitoyoshi-Kuma area. Speculation is that the high number of town’s blacksmiths contributes to this since the game was widely popular among them - they would often play it after work.

One-hour Um-Sum Carta course is available for 300 yen per person only in Hitoyoshi City.
