Chestnuts are cultivated extensively in the northern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, such as in Kuma District and Yamaga. Kumamoto holds the second position in chestnut production volume in Japan. Chestnuts from Kumamoto Prefecture are widely used, not only as a fresh food ingredient but also as a raw material for sweets such as Kurikinton. There are also a wide variety of local desserts using Yamae chestnuts from Kuma District and Yamaga Japanese chestnuts.
