Stretching 586 meters at a width of 10.9 meters, this bustling arcade street is home to around 170 shops, including restaurants, boutiques, jewelry stores, general stores, and cafes. Alongside Shimotori, it is one of Kumamoto City's main arcade streets. During the feudal era, it was an area of residences for lower-ranking samurai, and before the WWII, it was populated with the homes of common folk, bustling with students from the old Fifth High School and the local technical college. Remnants of its lively, cultured past still linger, as you can find bookstores, stationery shops, and art galleries that attract a multitude of young people today.
