The Kumamoto Prefectural Ancient Burial Mound Museum is located in the Kikuchi River basin, in the north of Kumamoto. This area is home to many ancient burial mounds and historical sites such as the Chibusan Burial Mound, which has been recognized as having cultural significance. The museum was built by Tadao Ando, a well-known architect, next to the Iwabaru Mounds. It is said to represent the shape of "Zenpokoenfun" (large keyhole-shaped burial mounds).
In the museum, you can see exhibitions of items excavated from the mounds, as well as full-scale models of the mounds. Visitors can also participate in workshops and learn how to make "Magatama", ornamental stones which historically functioned as ceremonial and religious objects.
