Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture is located in northwestern part.
It is the lower reaches of Kikuchi River, the largest river in the prefecture, which is fed by Mount Aso.
Tamana area has human development along the Kikuchi River since ancient times, it has prospered in commerce and agriculture.
In the plains, rice, tomatoes and strawberries are popular as well as horticulture.
In addition, ‘Tamana Ramen’ which is said to be the root of Kumamoto Ramen is a must-try for all ramen lovers!
Further attractions include two hot spring resorts: ‘Tamana Onsen’ a famous hot spring with a history of 1,300 years, and ‘Koten Onsen’ which appeared in Soseki Natsume's Kusamakura.
The caldera created by the great eruption of Mount Aso has been used by people for grazing livestock for over 1000 years.
In addition to repeated eruptions and ash fall, the forest has been prevented from growing by the repeated use of weeds and wild fires over the years, resulting in the spread of beautiful grasslands where a variety of plants grow and animals live, that are unique to grasslands.
Grazing in this wilderness, ‘Akaushi’ is as popular as wagyu beef with a good balance of healthy lean meat and fat. With a combination of umami taste and tender bite 。
Shirakawa Suigen is a spring located at the foot of Mount Aso.
Rainwater falls on Mount Aso, then soaks into the ground and gushes out after being filtered and cleaned in the strata of sand, gravel and ash.
The quality of the water is so good that it has been selected as one of the "100 best waters of Japan" by the Environment Agency.
The hard water in which minerals in the strata have dissolved is popular as mineral water, and water can be taken home freely.
It is also the source of the Shirakawa River that runs through the center of Kumamoto City, it is an important spot that has covered the Kumamoto Prefecture.
