Taniozaki Bairin Park

A plum blossom haven with a meditation stone linked to Miyamoto Musashi
During the era when Kato Kiyomasa ruled over Kumamoto, this area was known for cultivating plums for use as wartime provisions.  It later became a park on the site of Yakuinkenji Temple, a branch temple of Myogeji, the main Hosokawa family temple. In its prime blooming season, the park boasts about 20 varieties of plum trees that burst into vibrant colors. The view from the stone where the legendary Miyamoto Musashi is said to have meditated offers a beautiful panorama of the entire park.

■ Best viewing time: early February to mid-March
■ Number of trees: about 300
■ Illumination: none
■ Restrooms: available
