Misumi West Port is located on the west side of the Uto Peninsula, southwest of Kumamoto city. In 2015 it received a World Heritage Status designation as a major site of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution (1850s - 1910).
Misumi West Port was constructed between 1884 and 1887 by Mulder, a Dutch hydraulics engineer. The port was designed with a 730m long stone wharf and a floating pier; and well laid-out roads and drainage canals. It is protected as an important cultural property.
