Founded in the year 713, the shrine venerates the god Wadatsumi no Kami, and is also known by another name: Sword Shrine. The shrine is believed to provide relief for gastrointestinal diseases and is famous for its votive tablets featuring stingrays and a torii gate that stands in the sea. On the first day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, the shrine hosts the Hassaku Festival. This event coincides with the opportunity to observe the "shiranui" - mysterious lights that appear in the water off the coast - attracting many tourists to the shrine grounds.
